Birth to 5: what actually helps

And why we will not build a screen app for your baby, however much we would like the download.

Parents ask us a version of this constantly: my child is two, do you have something for them? Sometimes it arrives as a specific claim — that a famous technology founder shows greyscale patterns to a three-month-old, so surely there is an app for that.

We looked into it properly, because it deserves a real answer rather than a marketing one. Here is what we found, including the part that costs us a product.

The high-contrast science is real

A newborn's eyes are not small versions of yours. They focus sharply at roughly 20 to 30 centimetres — about the distance from a feeding baby's face to yours, which is not a coincidence. Colour vision is barely working at first, and the cells that detect light and dark are far more mature than the ones that detect hue.

So a newborn sees contrast long before they see colour. Bold black-and-white patterns are simply the strongest visual signal their system can process, which is why they hold a baby's gaze when a pastel mobile does not. Roughly:

None of that is controversial. High-contrast cards are a mainstream product for good reason.

The screen is the wrong way to deliver it

This is where the "baby brain training app" idea falls apart, on three separate grounds.

1. The guidance is explicit

The World Health Organization recommends no screen time at all under one year, states that sedentary screen time is not recommended for one-year-olds, and caps two-year-olds at one hour, less being better. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screens under 18 months, with one exception: video calls with family, because that is a conversation rather than content.

2. Babies genuinely do not learn from screens

There is a well-studied effect here with an unglamorous name: the video deficit, or more broadly the transfer deficit. Infants and toddlers learn measurably less from a video demonstration than from the identical thing done in front of them, and they struggle to carry what they saw on a flat screen into the three-dimensional world — in either direction.

A baby watching a screen is not getting a weaker version of the real lesson. They are often getting almost none of it.

It is most pronounced below age three and fades gradually after. So an app promising to build a toddler's brain through a display is not merely against guidance — it is working against how that brain actually takes information in.

3. The claims are a regulatory problem

Regulators have warned against unsubstantiated developmental claims for infant products and apps. "Boosts your baby's brain" is the kind of sentence that has to be evidenced, and for screens under two it cannot be.

So here is our position, plainly. Snag Academy will not make screen content for children under school age. Our app starts at Class 1, around age six, because that is when a child can actually reason about how a system works and explain it back. Anything earlier would be us taking your money for something that does not work.

What we made instead: printable cards

The contrast science is sound; only the screen was wrong. So we made the thing the evidence actually supports and gave it away: high-contrast cards you print at home, on paper, held at the distance a newborn can focus on. No device, no battery, no account, nothing to buy.

Six patterns for 0–3 months and six more complex ones for 3–6 months. Print, cut, hold about 25 cm from your baby's face for a minute or two at a time, and stop the moment they look away.
