The tap that tingles
A water heater can run perfectly for months and be unsafe the whole time. This is one of the clearest examples of a fault that hides until the day it matters.
Somebody touches the tap and feels a tingle. Nothing has broken. The geyser still heats water exactly as it always did. And yet something has been wrong since the day it was installed.
The wire that does nothing
An appliance has live and neutral wires, which carry the current that does the work. It also has a third wire, the earth, and during normal running the earth wire does nothing at all. No current flows through it. Disconnect it and the appliance keeps working perfectly.
That is precisely why its absence can hide for months. There is no symptom, because there is nothing for it to do yet.
What it is actually for
The earth wire exists for one day: the day the insulation inside fails and the metal body of the appliance becomes live.
With an earth wire connected, that fault current gets an easy path straight to ground. The surge is large and immediate, and it trips the breaker in milliseconds. The appliance dies, and nobody is hurt.
Without it, the fault current has nowhere convenient to go, so the metal body simply sits there live, waiting for a person to become the path. The tingle is that: a small amount of current finding a person.
Why this pattern is worth knowing
Engineers call this a latent failure: a fault that produces no symptom until a second thing goes wrong, at which point it produces a very large one. It is the most dangerous class of fault there is, because everything looks fine right up to the accident.
It is the same shape as a fire extinguisher nobody has checked, a spare tyre nobody has pumped, and a smoke alarm with a dead battery. Each contributes nothing on an ordinary day. Each is the whole difference on one particular day.

If a tap, a fridge or a washing machine ever tingles, stop using it and get an electrician. The tingle is not the problem. It is the only warning you get about the problem.
