The forest that filled with leaves
The food chain children are taught in school is missing something, and you can see the gap by asking a simple question: where does all the dead stuff go?
Sun feeds the grass. Grass feeds the deer. The deer feeds the tiger. That is the diagram in every textbook, and as far as it goes it is correct.
Now run it for ten years and ask what happens to the dead leaves, the fallen branches and the remains. In the diagram as drawn, they simply accumulate, and the soil gets poorer every year.
It is not a chain
The word "chain" is doing the damage. A chain has an end. Nutrients travel up it and stop.
What a forest actually runs is a cycle, and the part that closes the loop is the part usually left off the diagram: the decomposers. Fungi and bacteria, mostly. They break dead material down and return its nutrients to the soil, where plants take them up again.
Remove them and everything stops
Not dramatically, and not at once. The tiger does not notice. The deer does not notice. But nutrients start getting locked into dead matter permanently instead of circulating, and the soil slowly goes poor.
The quietest and smallest members of the system turn out to be the ones the whole thing depends on. That is a fairly reliable pattern in systems generally.
You can run one at home
A compost pit is a decomposer factory. Kitchen scraps go in at the top; months later, rich garden soil comes out of the bottom. Nothing was added in between except time, air and the organisms doing the work.
It is the same process the forest runs, at a speed a child can actually watch.
